PPIAF Sees Record Demand in its 10th Year 
As PPIAF celebrates its 10th anniversary, the program's clients faced unique challenges this year with the onset of the financial crisis. Despite the challenging global economic climate, demand for PPIAF assistance has never been greater. At $18.9 million, the total for grant commitments in fiscal 2009 is the largest ever. Learn more.

PPIAF–ADERASA, a Strategic Alliance        
In October 2001, representatives of 10 Latin American states created a regional association of water regulatory agencies: Association of Water Regulatory Entities of the Americas. ADERASA’s objectives are to promote cooperation and coordination of efforts in the water sector in Latin America by facilitating the exchange of experiences and collaboration around common initiatives in the field of regulation. PPIAF has allocated funding for ADERASA’s consolidation and helped generate regional public goods to strengthen the water and sanitation services regulation in the region. Learn more.

Web Site to Help Regulatory Professionals 
The Public Utility Research Center (PURC) at the University of Florida has updated the Body of Knowledge on Infrastructure Regulation (BoKIR) Web site. It provides information for utility professionals, policy-makers, and academics focusing on regulatory reform and the promotion of strong performance in energy, telecommunications, transportation, and water sectors. New Publications

Partnering for Water in Côte d’Ivoire
This Gridlines features an African success story that shows how a
pragmatic partnership between a committed government and an efficient private operator can produce tangible and sustained benefits for the population. 

Two reports jointly produced by the African Development Bank, PPIAF and the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP):
-- Water Utilities in Africa: Case studies of Transformation and Market Access. This report presents case studies from Burkina Faso, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia, on the qualities and attributes that signal the readiness of utilities to access commercial finance. Each case study incorporates an assessment of the local financial market environment, and attempts that have been undertaken by the utility to access those markets.
-- How Can Reforming African Water Utilities Tap Local Financial Markets? This overview accompanies the above publication and gives a summmary of key lessons and recommendations that emerged from the case studies.

Clean Hands Save Lives: Global Handwashing Day
The practice of handwashing with soap tops the international hygiene agenda on October 15, with the celebration of Global Handwashing Day. Launched in 2008 by the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap, this global event has been echoing and reinforcing the call for improved hygiene practices worldwide.
