Impact of the Financial Crisis on New PPI Projects
- Fourth Update
PPIAF and the World Bank's Economics Team in the Sustainable Development Department quarterly assesses the short-term impact of the financial crisis on infrastructure projects with private participation in developing countries. Measured by amount of investment, the rate of project closure grew by 2% in the first half of 2009 compared to the first half of 2008, indicating a strong recovery from the decline of 48% experienced in the second half of 2008. A Successful Partnership for Bridging an Infrastructure Gap
In the Indian state of Maharashtra, where peak demand for power is 16,000 megawatts (MW), power outages during peak hours have risen to 6,000 MW. The state-owned transmission company, Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited, decided mid-2005 on a plan to expand transmission capacity by 120 percent through investment of $5.5 billion over four years. A partnership with the World Bank was launched in 2006, with support from a PPIAF grant. Learn more.
Advanced Training on the Appraisal of Infrastructure Projects with Private Participation
PPIAF joined together with the Southern African Development Community-Development Finance Resource Center (SADC-DFRC), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), and Queen’s University to offer an advanced training workshop focused on quantitative aspects of PPI projects. The program concentrated specifically on cost-benefit analysis of PPI projects, including financial and economic appraisal and risk analysis. Learn more.
Integrating Light Rail/Metro Projects with India’s Transport Strategy
The government of India is assisting the implementation of public-private partnerships at the urban level with a robust program of training and capacity building. With presentations by World Bank experts and local government practitioners, a PPIAF-sponsored workshop explored options for private participation in light rail/metro, strategies for managing risks, and approaches to planning.
