A Future Forum on Infrastructure Regulation in MENA? PDF Print E-mail

January 13, 2010
The Regional Conference on Infrastructure Reform and Regulation, which took place in Amman in December 2009, brought together policy makers, regulators, service providers, civil society organizations and private-sector representatives from across the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). They represented different infrastructure sectors: telecommunications, power, gas, transport, water and sanitation.

PPIAF provided funding for the preparation of a background report and the organization of the conference. The objectives of the report were to assess the state of infrastructure development in the MENA region; assess reform progress and key challenges; and identify options for the establishment of a regional Forum of infrastructure regulation. The findings of this report were presented at the Conference and served to set the ground for participants’ discussions.

The main outcome was a resolution tasking the World Bank to work with MENA countries governments in order to establish a "Middle East and North Africa Infrastructure Regulatory Forum." The participants' feedback, the conference proceedings, and the conclusions were summarized in this report (PDF).
