Regional Backbones

Demand for high capacity/high speed broadband networks in developing countries is growing. Broadband networks are critical for high-bandwidth services and value-added services over cellular networks. Many African countries are giving priority to increasing the availability and affordability of broadband services as they recognize that broadband networks are essential for growth. PPIAF has supported various regional communications infrastructure projects, such as the Central African backbone network, the West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Project, as well as policy recommendations for improving the quality and capacity of the telecommunications environment in the ECOWAS region so it can meet the current and future needs of countries in the region and serve as an engine for economic growth.
